Frequently Asked Questions

What is ballroom dancing?

Ballroom dancing is a form of partner dancing in which two people move in harmony with each other and with the music. It usually occurs on a crowded dance floor. The presence of other dancers provides a major challenge to the couple, and the best dancers are able to move spontaneously but synchronously through the actions of leading and following. There are many types of ballroom dances, but they can be divided into two major classifications: International Standard/American Smooth and International Latin/American Rhythm.

It is the most physically demanding and mentally challenging of the forms, and thoroughly prepares students for social events as well as competition. While fitness, discipline and training are the key requirements for this sport, the learning process is fun and engaging, and bolsters confidence for all dance occasions.

What should I wear to my lessons?

We suggest wearing comfortable clothing that allows for movement. Our only rule is that you don't wear black, rubber-soled shoes, as they tend to scuff-up the dance floor. If you are taking lessons for a particular event, you may want to practice in the shoes you will wear to it. Our more serious students invest in dance shoes and practice clothing. We are happy to point you in the right direction for these.

What happens if I cancel my lesson at the last minute?

The DanceSport Academy maintains a 24 hour cancellation policy. Failure to give enough notice will result in you being charged for the lesson. We do make exceptions in certain emergency situations.

How often should I practice?

It's best to come at least once a week. You can easily fit lessons into your busy schedule by taking them back to back. Consistency makes an enormously productive difference in your dance training. The more regularly you have lessons, the more benefits you reap from them. If you have to miss a class, we will work with you to make up the time at your convenience. Remember, practice makes perfect!
